Mission and Guiding Principles
The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) agency founded in 1979. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for Cambodian-Americans by providing direct services, advocating and empowering Cambodian-Americans within Greater Philadelphia to obtain equal access to social/economic development, including quality health care and education. We also seek to promote racial harmony between Cambodians and our neighbors by fostering better communication, networking and promoting cultural awareness. Since our inception, we have developed and implemented many social, educational and cultural programs aimed at assisting our Cambodian American families to become self-sufficient.
The mission of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia is to help refugees and immigrants from Cambodia residing in Philadelphia to become self-sufficient, productive participants in our city while preserving and enhancing their cultural heritage and sense of belonging to a community.
WHERE WE WERE
Since our inception in 1979, our program location has been at the Cambodian Association office building located in the Olney section or North Philadelphia, an area consisting of approximately half of Philadelphia's Cambodian population.
In 2005, the Cambodian Association expanded its scope with the opening of a center in South Philadelphia, an area where over 50,000 Cambodians live. By means of loans, donations and extensive volunteer help, the Cambodian Association purchased a building located in the very center of this needy South Philadelphia community at 2416-18 S. 7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148 in an endeavor to provide much-needed services to this community.
WHERE WE ARE
The Department of Community and Economic Development Child Care Challenge financed the renovation of the first floor in 2005, where we have since implemented two major programs that have served to be valuable and long-standing resources for members in our North Office - the After-School Program and the Summer Camp Enrichment Program. Currently we can only enroll and seat 30 children comfortably on the first floor of the South Center. We have resorted also to serving our children and holding office hours all in one room, resulting in insufficient aisle space.
WHERE WE'RE GOING
The Cambodian Association seeks to renovate this building in order to be able to utilize it to its capacity and accommodate the multi-faceted needs of the residents in our community. A new second floor will double the space to serve the needs of adults through programs offered at the North Center for our adults and teenagers, including Basic Case Management; ESL/Citizenship Class Program; Khmer Elderly Service Program; Parent Volunteers Program; Parenting Enhancement Program; Traditional Cambodian Cultural Performing Arts Program; Youth Empowerment Program; and Youth Health Initiative.
